Over the past week, Missy's been going through her old stuff, looking for things to get rid of in an effort to downsize and tidy up. She's got albums upon albums of photos she took of almost every band she saw in the last half of the Nineties. I was trying to convince her to scan and digitize many of her photos, but since scanning is such a slow and tedious chore, she seems a little unwilling - so, one of these days I'll probably end up taking pictures of her pictures as they appear in her albums. Well, a bunch more at least...I couldn't resist but take a few pictures already. One of my favorite images is of Missy' letting her friend Christie draw a FAKE BLACK FLAG TATTOO on the back of her neck:
Here's Missy and a friend cradling a couple armloads of SOCK MONKEYS at the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh...opposite is a young NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL performing in Cleveland at a place called SPEAK IN TONGUES:
Seminal faves CUB and THE SOFTIES in action during the halcyon days of INDIEPOP:
We dug thru shoe boxes that Missy filled with 90's memorabilia. For us, it was like traveling back in time to our misspent youth. This box was filled with a lot of POSTCARDS, STICKERS, and MAIL ORDER CATALOGS. Here, Missy is holding up a post card from the long-defunct GO! RECORDS in Arlington, Virginia:
A silk-screened postcard from the band THE SPINANES:
A hand-printed postcard from the SEPTOPHILIA record label:
A postcard for the WINTER X-GAMES designed by one of my all-time favorite graphic designers, GEOFF MCFETRIDGE:
A hand-printed postcard by paper-cutter extraordinaire NIKKI MCCLURE:
Mail-order catalogs (remember those?) from X-GIRL, the fashion label started by KIM GORDON, of SONIC YOUTH and FREE KITTEN fame:
Funny MICHAEL JACKSON and CABBAGE PATCH DOLLS stickers (actually, those are more 80's than 90's):
An album of stickers taken in japanese-made PHOTO-STICKER BOOTHS:
A drawing that Missy did of all-girl indiepop band TIGER TRAP:
Some old K RECORDS and CATCH OF THE DAY (a.k.a. BUY OLYMPIA) mail order catalogs:
A stack of photo booth pictures taken at the Warhol Museum, including these funny ones with PHIL ELVERUM from THE MICROPHONES / MT. EERIE:
