Folklore: Home Church Road

FOLKLORE_HCR

I'm playing trumpet with FOLKLORE tonight at The Caledonia, here in Athens...it's an ALBUM RELEASE PARTY of sorts, to celebrate our new album, HOME CHURCH ROAD, coming out June 21st on Philly's SINGLE GIRL MARRIED GIRL RECORDS. This is a special and rare appearance, since our band leader, Jimmy Hughes (Elf Power, Fairmount Fair), moved to Philadelphia last year, and started a Philly version of the band. He's visiting long enough for us to throw together the Athens version of Folklore back together and put on a show. For more info on tonight's show, go HERE....and for more information on the new record (yes, I play on it!), please visit the Single Girl, Married Girl website HERE....and for more information on Folklore the band, visit our webpage HERE.

Come say "Hi!" and hang out with us, Athens!

Folklore At The Earl

FOLKLORE 8836
(clever marketing on the pegboard behind the merch table)

Here are some images from last night's MEGA FOLKLORE show at THE EARL in East Atlanta...the show was o.k., considering that we were sandwiched in between two very polished, "radio friendly", bands. Needless to say, we stuck out like a sore thumb. At one point during our set some yuppie frat dude heckled us by yelling out "SMOKE A JOINT!" after a particularly psychedelic jammy jam, which we thought was pretty funny. Like, why state the obvious?

Anyways, you're going to need to take a nap this evening before coming out to Folklore tonight...we'll be playing an all-ages show at BEN'S BIKES tonight, with Sugar D, Werewolves, and Titans Of Filth...and it's totally FREE! I think things start around 10pm (which means, 11pm in "Athens Time"). I believe Ben's Bikes is located behind and below Southern Video, an "adult entertainment" store on Broad Street - but don't let that scare you! You can click HERE for more info and to see how cool the space actually is...

More Folklore

FOLKLORE 8808

Last night's MEGA FOLKLORE show at the CALEDONIA in downtown Athens was a lot of fun...despite the club not having a current liquor license (and thus, not allowed to sell alcohol), a nice crowd of people were there to show us the love. Best of all was perfectly combining the Northern and Southern versions of FOLKLORE into one giant band. It could have been a hot mess, but we sounded so good that you wouldn't have known that we all only practiced together ONCE, just a couple of hours before the show. These are just a few images I was able to take while standing on stage, in between songs or in between trumpet parts...

TONIGHT (Saturday), we rock THE EARL in Atlanta, Georgia. We'll be playing with TRAVEL BY TRAIN, and NIGHT DRIVING IN SMALL TOWNS...for more info, click HERE. If you're hurtin' for something to do in the ATL tonight then come on down, knock back a few drinks, and enjoy some good music...

Folklore - Voltron Tour 2010!

FOLKLORE

Hey Everybody! I'm going to be a-playin' my trumpet with FOLKLORE all this weekend and you should come check us out if you can because I don't know how often this is going to happen!...ya see, Jimmy Hughes, the head honcho of Folklore, moved away from Athens, Georgia last year and re-located to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has since put together a PHILLY VERSION of Folklore and they started playing a buncha shows in and around the Philly area. This is the first time the Philly version of Folklore will be touring down to Georgia and we are going to be combining the Northern and Southern members of the band into one big SUPER GROUP (in my head I've been calling it MEGA FOLKLORE). You can read about all the details HERE, via FLAGPOLE, our local arts, culture, and entertainment weekly...Mega Folklore will be playing two shows in Athens, and one in Atlanta, starting this Friday night:

Fri 1/22 - Athens, GA @ THE CALEDONIA LOUNGE
w/ Quiet Hooves, Summer Hymns, Night Moves

Sat 1/23 - Atlanta, GA @ THE EARL
w/ Travel By Train, Night Driving In Small Towns

Folklore + Still Flyin' Mini Tour!

FOLKLORE 0403

Hey all you North-Easterners! FOLKLORE (Athens/Philadelphia) and STILL FLYIN' (San Francisco) are doing a mini tour this weekend in your area and you should definitely go check them out...you will NOT be disappointed, guaranteed! They are playing dates in NYC, Boston, and Philly, so there are plenty of chances to catch them in action. I won't be playing trumpet with Folklore - Jimmy has since moved away from Athens to Philly and started a "northern version" of Folklore - nor will I be playing with Still Flyin', which I've also had the pleasure of playing trumpet with for a couple of shows and also recorded with, so this is doubly tragic for me to not be able to be there...but totally awesome for YOU, if you happen to be in the area:

Friday April 3rd - Brooklyn NY @ Union Hall www.unionhallny.com
Saturday April 4th - Boston MA @ PA's Lounge www.paslounge.com
Sunday April 5th - New York NY @ The Cake Shop www.cake-shop.com
Monday April 6th - Philadelphia PA @ Johnny Brenda's www.johnnybrendas.com

FOLKLORE is headed by Jimmy Hughes who runs BUMBLEBEAR RECORDS and who is also a current member of ELF POWER. STILL FLYIN' is a indiepop supergroup of sorts, which includes members of MASTERS OF THE HEMISPHERE, AISLER'S SET, POUNDSIGN, THE BRIGHT LIGHTS, RED PONY CLOCK, KISSING BOOK, LADYBUG TRANSISTOR and a few other bands I'm probably forgetting...so, if you go see Folklore and Still Flyin' play, it's kinda like seeing half-a-dozen bands for the price of two! Kinda, but not really. Anyways, go see them because they are a lot of fun live and quite a spectacle. You NEED THAT in your life, especially this weekend!

Catching Up

Here are some photos from the FOLKLORE show the other night at the 40 Watt...I didn't get a lot of good pictures or video, but I'll share the few that I did. Sadly, I ended up missing FUTURE APE TAPES' set, which I was really looking forward to. It's a rare that a show starts on time or even early here in Athens, and that was why I missed their set. I assumed they would start their set much later than I thought. For this very same reason, some friends of mine ended up missing the Folklore set! anyways, here are a few photos and videos from Tuesday night, starting with a shot of HAM 1 tearing it down:

...and then FOLKLORE. This is like, the third "last ever Folklore show" that we've done, with maaaaybe a chance for one more:

Folklore Encore

FOLKLORE vs. KINKS

ELF POWER are back in town having completed the first leg of their tour, and, since Jimmy's back in town, FOLKLORE decided to do an encore performance of our tribute to the KINKS and their concept album, "The Village Green Preservation Society". Show is this Tuesday night at the fabulous 40 WATT here in downtown Athens, Georgia. We'll be performing with HAM 1, who have been touring with Elf Power, and Athens' awesomely left-field hip-hop group FUTURE APE TAPES. Oh Yes. It's gonna be a terrific show. Believe that! So, come have some drinks, hang out with your friends, and come say "good bye" to us one last time.

That's All Folks!

40 WATT 8207

Here are some images from FOLKLORE's farewell show at the 40 WATT last wednesday, June 18th, 2008...

When Missy dropped me off back at the 40 Watt, KING OF PRUSSIA were pretty much finishing up their set:

40 WATT 8184

Up next was PAPER TANKS and their brand of junk yard psychedelica:

40 WATT 8192

Some members of Paper Tanks stayed on to help back up THE SUMMER HYMNS...they sounded like the reverb-drenched and wine-soaked drunk cousins of the band Luna...hazy, boozy, and languid:

40 WATT 8193

I left half-way through the Hymns' set to hang with the band backstage for one last time...the curtain behind Jon and Jimmy covers up a hole in the wall where there was once some graffiti written by Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. Some over-zealous fan cut that portion out from the wall and took it with them...

Our final set list:

Jimmy gave me his old air organ, and as the rest of the band set up their equipment, I dashed out to my car with the organ and put it in the trunk of LORD FOCUS, my trusty silver Ford Focus...I took a photo of the crowd outside the club:

Then, Folklore hit the 40 Watt stage for one last time:

DEXTER ROMWEBER, of the FLAT DUO JETS played an extended set, well past closing time. Dexter was on a roll. He was in town for a special screening of the documentary ATHENS, GA INSIDE/OUT, which played CINE as part of the ATHFEST festival...he had played a full set at a different club in somewhere in Athens before coming to the 40 Watt and playing a solo set full of rockabilly scorchers, down-home blues numbers, and golden oldies ballads...supposedly, this night was also his birthday:
