It's Summertime, Root Beer Float Time

I had a black cow and Raoul had a root beer float.
Raoul and I are enjoying the nice southern summer! We are enjoying it by making root beer floats and black cows at home.

Root beer floats!
What is a black cow? Well, it is like a root beer float, but it has chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla.

Yummy.
We used to get black cows at Jerry's Curb Service all the time when I lived in Pennsylvania. Jerry's is a great little diner where the car hops come out to your car and serve you from a big tray that hooks to your window. You can eat your burger and fries in your car! And have a black cow!

Cooling off with a black cow - root beer and chocolate ice cream.

What's your favorite summer drink?

Mochi Making

Ready to be chilled.
Raoul and I made a batch of daifuku mochi! It was very simple to make, and was really yummy to boot.

Recipe.
We used the recipe from my candy making book. We also read some recipes online before beginning.

Making mochi.

Mochi dough that I made so pink!
We added some pink food coloring to our mochi dough. Here are the pictures of how it looked when we removed the dough from the microwave. It looked like Play-doh!

Making mochi!
We rolled and kneaded the dough after it cooled off some. Careful when it comes out of the microwave, this dough is like lava!

Adding the filling!
We added some strawberry jam to the center of the mochi, not the usual red bean paste. I was trying hard not to over fill the mochi, or else the jam would ooze out of the ball when I rolled it.

Little mochi.
Here is the rolled mochi!

Koala Ice Cream Treat

Koala ice creams! Yay!!!!
This time of year, when it is so cold and wintery, sometimes I crave a sweet, cold treat. I know it sounds crazy, but I remember going holiday shopping, or picking a Christmas tree, and just craving an ice cream sundae! So we would stop at Eat N Park on the ride home to have sundaes!

Raoul had one, too.
I made these koala ice creams for Raoul and I - don't they look so cute?

My koala ice cream!
I used a chocolate covered almond for the koala's nose, currants for the eyes, and Madelines for the ears. Yummy!

Weekend Wind-Down #156

THNX 8189

It's been a while since we've done a WEEKEND WIND-DOWN post...things have been crazy busy between caring for our sick bunnies and taking care of all the crafting biz. THANKSGIVING gave us a bit of a respite, but soon we were back firing up the factory. Good thing we made enough food to last us through our 4-day weekend...we started our Thanksgiving morning with homemade BISCUITS AND GRAVY, which we gorged ourselves on while watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade...

After a short food-coma nap, Missy started on a FANCY PUMPKIN PIE recipe she got from one of her fancy Martha Stewart cookbooks. We also ended up making little PUMPKIN PIE TARTS with all the left-over pie dough and pumpkin filling...

While the pie cooled in the fridge, we got started on our vegetarian Thanksgiving dinner...stuffed peppers, roasted carrots, sesame-roasted brussels sprouts, stuffing, and a huge vat of my infamously-delicious mashed potatoes...

On a whim, we also picked up a couple of these ICE CREAM TURKEY LEGS from Baskin Robbins. The legs are actually upside-down ice cream cones slathered and glazed with sickly sweet caramel to give them an authentic turkey leg look...

Happy Thanksgiving!

thanksgiving 2012
Check out these great "turkey legs" that I have! We got them from Baskin Robbin. These are really ice cream cones that are placed upside down and made into a turkey leg shape. It is covered in caramel for the "turkey look." They also had the whole turkey, but it was sold out. Happy Thanksgiving!

Halloween 2012

Ghost Pizza Halloween Food 3
This Halloween Raoul and I made ghost pizza that I saw on Pinterest. I did not follow the recipe, but I made the ghosts the same way. I do not have a ghost cookie cutter (I know, it seems like something I should have, really) so I just cut out my ghosts by hand. They came out really good because the cheese melted nicely in the oven!

So here is how the pizzas looked before they were baked in the oven.

I did use a mini cat cookie cutter on one - can you spot the cat?
