Yesterday we got up early to make the inaugural ATHENS EGG DROP at the local YMCA, which is just around the corner from our house:
Luckily we got there early...there was a line of thousands of people waiting to get into the egg hunt! Rumors spread through the line quickly that they were going to be giving away iPods, and so that's why so many people showed up:
(the line stretching behind us)
(the line stretching in front of us)
The volunteers announced that they were only allowed to admit 4000 people onto the YMCA fields...we were seriously worried that we would not get in...but we did! (in the end, we did find out that there were people who were turned away and saw a bunch of families waiting to get in, even after the egg hunt....which means there were at least 4000+ people at this event).
When we finally got through the gates, there was a throng of people...there were a bunch of different activity stations and tents where families could bide their time before the egg drop and hunt:
(my favorite kid: this little guy stood in front of the bubble maker, giggling uncontrollably. Even when his grandmother would pull him away, he would run back so that he could be pelted by bubbles...)
We wanted to find out if indeed they were giving away iPods...we found out that not only were they giving away iPod Nanos and Shuffles, but they were also giving away Nintendo and Playstation game systems and COLD HARD CASH...
Unfortunately, we also found out that you had to be 18 and under in order to qualify, and you had to be accompanied by a parent or two...boo! So, feeling a little dissapointed, we headed out to the field where the egg drop and hunt was to take place:
The field was already strewn with plastic eggs, but the volunteers kept assuring everyone that a helicopter would be coming to add to the bounty. Me and Missy eagerly awaited the helicopter from our little hillside vantage point...

blake and i drove by the YMCA egg drop on our way out of town. we saw the helicopter (dangerously close to the crowds of people there) and saw lots of sad kids with empty easter baskets walking back to their vehicles. i'm eagerly awaiting a finale' blog to include all of your easter weekend activities. we had some laughs this weekend in south georgia. for one thing, blake's grandmother was spraying everyone at her 50th wedding anniversary party with listerine. yesy! listerine. she read on the internet that listerine would keep mosquitoes away. it didn't work and we all smelled like citrus listerine.
okay...so see you two soon!!
Hi Sara!
Yeah, we thought for sure that we would see you two at the Y...at the very least, we thought we'd see Blake at work or something. Needless to say, the helicopter coming to drop eggs was super cool...at least you saw some of it while driving by...
