Weekend Wind-Down #70

(Leia's freshly-colored PEE WEE HERMAN tat, courtesy of PAIN & WONDER, dwntwn Athens)
Our friend LEIA was in town from Cleveland, Ohio - she was here with her band, THE AFTERNOON NAPS, to play at the big HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME RECORDS 10th anniversary gala. Yesterday, after we had a late brunch with her and her bandmates, Leia came over to Rancho Cocoa so that she could geek out with Missy over BLYTHE DOLLS and so Leia's vintage KENNER BLYTHE DOLL could had a play date with Missy's girls. First they played in the little REMENT BAKERY...
Then Leia's gal reclined against Nilla's super fluffy rump...
Then the girls posed for photos with our baby cantaloupes...
They hung out with our collection of plush thingys in our living room...
And then rode side-saddle on the back of a huge horse...
Before we knew it, the afternoon was over...we dropped Leia off at The Caledonia, just in time for her soundcheck, and bid her adieu. Missy and I headed for THE YOUNG BLOOD GALLERY in Atlanta to catch a showing of HANDMADE NATION...it was being shown in conjunction with a big film festival that was happening in the city. Unfortunately, we had left Athens a lot later than we planned and got to Young Blood a little too late. When we got there, everyone was already in the back, in the darkened gallery part of the store, watching the film. We hung out in the store listening to the movie, but weren't able to buy anything because they were actually "closed" for business, due to the film...darn it too, because I really really wanted to buy these GANGSTA RAP STICKER PACKS:

Feeling a bit defeated, we exited and headed a couple of doors down to the ATLANTA CUPCAKE FACTORY to console ourselves with some gourmet cupcake yummy goodness. I opted for the LEMON ON LEMON cupcake and Missy chose the spicy MEXICAN CHOCOLATE cupcake. We told our sad luck story to one of the owners of the bakery - about how we had driven all the way from Athens to Atlanta to see this movie and how we got here a little too late...I think he felt sorry for us and ended up hooking us up with extra cupcakes! So, we ended up getting six sinfully delicious cupcakes for the price of two...

We ate the two cupcakes we had originally ordered (the Mexican Chocolate had a hot spicy kick to it...so awesome!) and then stashed the rest in the car, before walking over to the hipster wasteland that is URBAN OUTFITTERS...we wanted to check it out because Missy's baby brother, Joe, just interviewed for a job there - if all goes well, he'll be designing and building the displays for a new store that's being built in Red Bank, New Jersey. Not wanting to go home empty handed, I ended up buying a little STYLOPHONE KEYBOARD, which I ended up playing late into the night, annoying Missy, the pets, and probably our neighbors...

Shiny Happy People

This is too cute not to share...tonight we headed over to JO and ANDRE's house to help them celebrate their 5-year WEDDING ANNIVERSARY. Jo owns and operates HONEY'S SALON (it's where Missy gets her hair did) and André writes the NEITHER BIG NOR TALL blog (he did the story on Missy's TOFU BABY for FLAGPOLE). There was plenty of Mexican food and mariachi music spinning on the record player, an amazing chocolate cake, a pop quiz about how they met, and slow dancing in the backyard to R.E.M.'s SHINY HAPPY PEOPLE...Happy Anniversary, Jo & André!

Sketchbook Sunday

Drawings in a hand drawn book for Susan at Canopy, our trapeze studio., originally uploaded by sugar-cookie.
So tonight I share with you some drawings from a little handmade book that I drew for Susan's going away scrapbook. Susan was the director of CANOPY STUDIO where I take trapeze classes here in Athens.
The first time I saw trapeze here in Athens was at TASTY WORLD, at the after party for FLUKE, the yearly zine fair. I saw the TRAPEZE TARTS with their cute costumes and amazing aerials - I just had to try this for myself!
I started my first trapeze classes in spring of 2004. Now, I started these classes not knowing what I was in for. I started yoga classes in winter of the same year, so that was good conditioning for trapeze. After the first few classes, my body hurt in ways I did not know were possible! Nowadays, I feel like I can take on pretty much anything. And this is coming from someone who was never good in gym class and was always picked last! I think MARY JESSICA and I maybe had similar backgrounds coming in to Canopy!
I am not a dancer, I am not graceful, and I am not a gymnast. I am clumsy! At least at Canopy I can try and forget those things and focus on trying to be things I am not. I sometimes imagine my time at Canopy more like the performance art I would see at the Warhol Museum at home. Movement, sound, and visuals, all in one.
At the start of 2005 I began silks aerials! This proved to be more difficult than trapeze to me. I thought I would never be able to flip upside-down without help from the floor! I also sometimes get nervous being up so high. I am slowly getting over this, but some days that feeling does not show up at all.
I hope you enjoyed my story about Canopy and my little drawings that went with it. This would not be possible without my fabulous teachers (past and present) - Julie, Allison, Chris, Megan, Nicole, Dana, etc. so not to forget anyone, and of course, Susan!
Knightmare Tour!

(Knight School's EL GOLD blogs about tour on her iPhone as My Teenage Stride sound checks)
My friend Kevin was in town this past Thursday with his new band, KNIGHT SCHOOL...they were on tour with another indiepop band from Brooklyn called MY TEENAGE STRIDE. We met them at the CALEDONIA LOUNGE during their sound check and then stuck around to see them play...
Kevin, Lisa, and Chris of Knight School opened up the show with their garage-y pop sound
KNIGHTMARE 5539 from Raoul de la Cruz on Vimeo.

Local hip hop crew FUTURE APE TAPES filled the next spot on the bill with freestyle rhymes and disjointed beats...

Afterwards, MY TEENAGE STRIDE expertly commandeered the stage and got things hopping with their raucous style of pop...

At the end of the night, Jed from My Teenage Stride, and Kevin took a quick breather before loading up the van and finding places to stay for the night. Kevin and Lisa from Knight School ended coming over to RANCHO COCOA...Nilla was excited to have company and showed off by rolling around on our dining room table, being utterly cute...Lisa took photos of Nilla for her tour blog, BANDS ON THE RUN

I took Friday off work so I could hang out for a little bit longer with Kevin and Lisa. We ended up at THE GRIT for breakfast, where we were served more food than we could possibly finish. After loading up on food, I took Lisa and Kevin to meet up with the rest of their tour mates...they loaded up their cramped mini van and away they went on their way to a house show in Virginia...

Blast From the Past: Snowflake Soiree
Do you remember the first indie craft market you participated in? Well, I was reminded of the Snowflake Soiree we had from Emily's thoughtful post. This was a great memory for me cos Raoul had just moved here at the end of October and I had set up the Soiree at the Athens Recess Center.
The Athens Recess Center (aka ARC) was a community space run by locals, namely my friend Jo, who was thrilled to have the ARC host this event. We had the chalkboard out and balloons from my work, too. Even though it rained, we had an excellent turn out. All our goodie bags got snatched up so fast!

We had our table packed to the gills with Raoul's pouches, plush doggies, ornaments, zines, and much more. I have not looked at these photos in a long time. I see lots of handmade goodies that I don't even make anymore. Maybe I should bring some of that stuff back?
Emily and Jenny were at a table together. Look at all those fabulous goodies! We had a bunch of crafters there - like Glue and Glitter, A bardis, Deli Made, and Genevieve Gail to name a few.
And Sarah, too!

Here I am, too. Wow, December 2005 does not seem like that long ago, but my, we have come a long way!

Weekend Wind-Down #68

Yesterday we walked up to the new CVS PHARMACY that opened up the street from us. They had been open for a couple of weeks, but yesterday they had a grand opening party. We drove by it earlier in the day, while we were running errands. We saw a moonbounce, a petting zoo, food stalls, and a DJ, packed into a crowded parking lot...it looked pretty exciting! But by the time we got back home and then walked to the CVS, the party was over and the employees were already cleaning up the mess. Oh well. A couple weeks before the grand opening, CVS had mailed out all these crazy coupons to the houses in the surrounding neighborhood in an effort to get people to come check them out. Needless to say, it worked...we were there to cash in before the coupon expired this weekend...
Turns out that there's a lot more to be had at the CVS than we expected...it's nice to know that if we ever need anything at the last minute - shipping supplies, toiletries, medicine, food - we can always pop up the street in no time, 24 HOURS A DAY. It's nice to have that sort of convenience really close by...

One of the coupons we took advantage of was this offer to get 25 photos printed for free. Missy just happened to have her camera on her and we printed some photos off her memory card...

Factory Girl

Late afternoon: sitting on our craft room floor, I helped Missy staple a ton of little MINI COMICS...some old, most new...they're going to help fill some orders, including a couple of restocks of some brick and mortar stores that carry Missy's "stuff". As she cut and sequenced the pages, I deftly stapled and stacked...we were a little zine making factory...

Works In Progress

Missy had an AERIAL PERFORMANCE tonight at CANOPY STUDIO...last night she got to babysit the SILK SLING that she was going to use in order to insure that the sling was tied properly...
The performance was a student show, showcasing "works in progress" by different groups from different classes. Missy's group was scheduled to go on very last. I took a few photos of a couple of the groups and then filmed Missy's entire performance...it was kinda hard to get good photos because the studio was backlit by sunlight streaming in through the high windows...

If you can't tell from the grainy video, Missy is the one in the middle of the group, on the fuchsia silk, and if you can't tell from the bad audio, the group is performing to a COCTEAU TWINS song...considering that we had been up since around 4am and we were dead tired, it was the perfect end to a very very long day...

Dear Creatures

Here's Missy in the BIRD BATH (a.k.a. the master bath) trying on her cute new dress from DEAR CREATURES. She's standing on the toilet so she can see herself in the mirror and see how the dress looks on her. Last week, moments after she had ordered the dress online, we saw ZOOEY DESCHANEL wearing the exact same one (but in navy blue) on an episode of TOP CHEF...so Missy was especially excited to try it on when it arrived on our doorstep...straight from the box in all it's wrinkled glory.

Snuggle Bunny Monday
Oreo is usually a very busy bunny, but here she is in total relax mode! Check out her back feet tucked up on her sides. She is so silly. Check out all the stuff that she enjoys playing with, too - like cardboard and oatmeal containers.
I got her a Nibble Knot a few weeks ago and she tore that thing up! Just look at it. It is the rainbow-colored wooden toy on the left.
Here is the final cute Oreo photo of the day! Aw!

Here are some of my new drawings I am working on. I love tracing my drawings to tracing paper! It is alot of fun to me. Here you see my drawings taped to the window on a sometimes sunny day.
I am thinking of making a series of drawings of kids in hoods. I used to sew these hoods with cat ears and bear ears. I think I still have some! And of course I love the Red Riding Hood look, too.

No Not With The Light On

I don't usually go out to shows on a week night because I usually have to get up early for work the next day...and I'd like to think I've grown into a "responsible adult". This past thursday night was the exception to the rule though, because sometimes when "CHANCE" puts an opportunity in front of you, you have to take it and see where the magic takes you. Thursday on the way home from work, Missy and I were trying to decide where to go for dinner - we were both famished and feeling much too lazy to cook. As usual, we found ourselves at THE GRIT. As soon as we entered the restaurant we were greeted with smiles and "hey!"s from a table full of strangely familiar faces. It finally took a minute or two for Missy and I to realize that 1) these people were from out of town, 2) we knew some of these people, or at least knew of them, 3) they must be in town to play a show! Turns out that the members of IJI, WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS, and THE BLANKET TRUTH were all sitting at that table, finishing up their meal. We quickly found out that they were actually hoping to run into me and Missy downtown (something that's all too easy to do in a place like Athens) because they were playing a show that was *JUST* thrown together...it was going to be Iji (pronounced EEE-HEE), Watercolor Paintings, Theo from NANA GRIZOL, Julian Koster from THE MUSIC TAPES and NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL, and unknown "others" playing a potluck at the SECRET SQUIRREL...and that best of all, the show started super early - at 8PM. I thought, "yeah, I can do that!"...only in Athens...
Amazingly, the show started on time, with Theo kicking off the festivities...people sang along to a few of the Nana Grizol tunes he performed:
SQRRRL 5380 from Raoul de la Cruz on Vimeo.
Julian took the floor next, setting up next to a surreal Turkish MINARET, with hands that came out of it and gently stroked a keyboard. He played his SINGING SAWS along with some sort of GYPSY ACCORDION MUSIC emanating from the tower. I could not help but think of the song "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" the entire time...

Julian and a friend performed a rendition of the Christmas classic "LET IT SNOW" for the crowd:

Afterwards, Santa Barbara, California's Watercolor Paintings, charmed the crowd while sitting on the side of the stage:

Just when we thought the night was over, John Fernandes of Olivia Tremor Control pulled out a BASS CLARINET and started playing along to a cassette which he threw into an 8-track recorder...as his set got underway and the lights were dimmed, I decided that I better call it a night, knowing that I would have to get up for an early morning meeting in just a handful of hours...

The Donger

Like many Gen-Xer's that grew up in the 80's, I was saddened to hear that director JOHN HUGHES passed away yesterday. I could go on and on about how his movies helped to shape my young impressionable mind, but I'll resist the temptation. Instead, I was reminded of a funny avatar I made for my FRIENDSTER profile many many years ago...I found a film still from John Hughes' FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF, featuring actor GEDDE WATANABE as foreign exchange student LONG DUK DONG (a.k.a. "THE DONGER"), resting his head on the ample breasts of his "American-style girlfriend"...I sloppily replaced his head with a photo of MY OWN HEAD...needless to say, I still crack myself up at how terrible it looks...I regret that I can't make the images any larger, without them looking terribly grainy. Anyways, you get the idea. Pour one out for Mr. John Hughes and watch one of his classic movies this weekend...

You Say Tomato

The recent rains have been good to our little backyard garden, causing new tomatoes to pop from the vines. We picked a trio of CHERRY TOMATOES which we promptly ate. As cliche as it sounds, vegetables really do taste way better when you grow them organically yourself! Seriously, the tomatoes we've eaten out of our garden so far have put any store bought tomato we've eaten in the past to shame. We're hoping to plant even more vegetables in our yard soon and can't wait for our current plants to give us more food...

Snuggle Bunny Monday
We have OREO as our inside bunny, and here is the WILD BUNNY that lives outside. We have seen this bun for quite some time now, and this is either the mom or the baby.
Here we see her in our backyard doing lots of bunny things! These photos were taken while standing in our kitchen and peeking through the window above the sink. It faces the back yard. So far we see this bunny every evening in the back yard. I think she is nibbling on our OREGANO and other garden goodies.
We also spy this bunny in the front yard, too. She just likes hanging out in our yard, I guess!

Weekend Wind-Down #66

We had got a big bag of thick GERMAN EGG NOODLES, made with free-range eggs, from the EUROPEAN DELI (previous post HERE). We boiled them along with some frozen peas, while Missy improvised a sauce made with soy sauce, soy milk, nutritional yeast, water, butter, sage, thyme, dill, garlic, pepper, coriander, plus half a veggie bouillon cube. We also steamed a bunch of baby carrots, and mixed everything into a big hearty stew, enough to last us a couple of days...talk about carbo load! It's the sort of meal that makes more sense during the fall and winter, but certainly not during the summer!
BTW....TOTALLY YUMMIES!
