Weekend Wind-Down #62

OREO 4684

OREO 4682

Oof. We've had a long weekend with ATHFEST here in town...we were out late Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, watching bands and taking in the festival atmosphere...my new band, THE SLOW ROWBOAT, even performed on Saturday. I've got photos and videos from the past couple of days events and it's taking me a long time to process everything because I'M BEAT. All the running around, not to mention the oppressive heat, finally caught up to us and we're just too damn tired to do anything productive...and I just hate that feeling! So, I thought that if I could at least bust out a new WEEKEND WIND-DOWN, it would be better than nothing. Hey, I made a new zine!

Kneehigh Cupcakes, originally uploaded by sugar-cookie.

As most of you know, I got my start self publishing many mini comic books and zines when I was in high school and college. I still dream of making my own magazine, but for now I just made a mini. This is my new one that is part of my Kneehigh series. It is all about cupcakes I have made, cupcakes I have had on my travels, and cupcakes I remember from my childhood. I think it is interesting to think about the variety in cupcakes, as well as how yummy they taste. Check it out - it is available on my website and my Shoppe Sugar Cookie on Etsy.

While I am on a roll, I have two more Kneehigh comics in the works. One is all about Blythe dolls and the other is about donuts!

Nilla Sixty

Nilla is so happy., originally uploaded by sugar-cookie.

We are a day late posting Nilla Day, but that is okay cos we were at last night's Flagpole Music Awards! I am sure we will post photos and news about that, but first things first. Here is our sweet kitty Nilla rolling on the new green rug I purchased last month! This photo makes her look like her head is tiny and her body is not so tiny, but it is all fluff. I swear!

Rolly Nilla.
Here is Nilla happily rolling around. She loves to roll.

Happy Father's Day Interview With my Dad

Here it is, another Father's Day! I am going to interview my Dad for all the readers at home. This year we pitched in and got my dad a radio controlled helicopter. I think this is going to be a great gift, and like I told you on the phone, don't go flying it into any power lines, okay? Now on with the interview...

1. What is the best part about being a dad?
Having great kids that all turned out to be decent, productive and caring people.

2. What is the worst part about being a dad?
Paying my part for education.

3. What is the best Father's Day gift?
A Harley would be nice, but just knowing all my kids are safe and healthy is the best.

4. Tell us about the gift we got you this year. What do you think?
The Hofbrauhaus on the Southside was a hoot. Good food and drink, it brought back memories of my days in the Air Force stationed in Germany.

I haven't made my maiden flight of my helicopter yet.

5. Greg thought you would break this gift. And we all thought you would lose your ipod when you got that for Christmas.
As it turns out, I still have my Ipod, I try to keep a close eye on it. I let Joey have the first turn on the flight stick of my new helicopter. He lifted off really nice, but then proceeded to fly it into the rhododendron bush in front of the house. A few pieces flew off, but it goes back together easily. Now I'm starting to get the hang of it, but it's going to take a lot of flight training.

6. Did you always know you were going to be a dad?
I didn't always know. I got my first inkling when Rita told me she was pregnant.

7. Do you have plans for Father's Day?
I think I'll go to Rita's, the ice cream shop that is!

Dad ready for tennis!
Thanks, Dad! Happy Father's Day to the Number One in my life. I love you! I know you are going to say something to me about my choice in photos, but trust me, did you really want me to post the one of us with big googley eyes?

And when you come to visit you wanna catch a game of tennis??

Sketchbook Sunday

Above is a sketch of my new Kneehigh zine all about cupcakes. Raoul thought it would be a good idea to show you some of my process. I did try my best to make these photos more view-able, but at least you can see how I sketch these. Usually I do not use pencil at all, but on these I did.

Kneehigh: Cupcakes being inked.
Now you can see the inked version of this mini zine. I wrote a little story about each cupcake and drew some pictures. I think it will be a good addition to my popular Kneehigh series of comic books!

Happy Father's Day!

Dad

Happy Father's Day! This is one of my favorite pictures of my DAD...it was taken by my neice, JULIA, at my cousin's wedding a couple of years back. I like it because it is totally from a little kid's point of view and because when I was little, I probably looked up at him in that same way a million times. I love you, DAD!

Little Dog Goes For A Walk

Open here please., originally uploaded by sugar-cookie.

I love shopping on Etsy, even though I am a seller, too. I found a beautiful handmade doll, Little Dog Goes for a Walk by one of my favorite sellers, Misako Mimoko. Misako Mimoko is really Eva in Spain. Please have a peek at how she packaged my lovely doll!

I love the little teapot character!!

Thank you!
The package had a thank you note to me and was carefully wrapped in tissue paper.

cute box!
A colorful illustration was the backing scene for the Little Dog. She really is going for a walk.

Look at that sweet face.
Look at the detail in those stitches! I love Little Dog's look.

Now Little Dog is going for a walk on my desk! I love you, Little Dog. I think she needs a name. What do you think?

Bunny Monday (And Kitty, Too!)

Nilla and Oreo kiss., originally uploaded by sugar-cookie.

This weekend we put OREO in her "summer home." That just means we moved her home into our craft room before it gets too terribly hot outside. Bunnies do not like hot humid weather, and neither do I. I am never quite ready for summer here in Athens! Anyways, Nilla and Oreo met up close for the first time this weekend, and they are getting along very well. Nilla is very curious about Oreo - she likes to "kiss" her! Oh, and Nilla is never with Oreo unsupervised. I love this set up cos I can pet both pets at the same time!

SUPER 4610

Last Thursday, Missy, me, and the rest of the ART DEPARTMENT from work, headed out to the SUPER FLORAL SHOW at the GEORGIA WORLD CONGRESS CENTER in downtown Atlanta. It was basically a trade show for corporate buyers, sellers, and distributors in the floral industry. Needless to say, there were a lot of flowers to be seen - a lot that we weren't allowed to take photos of:

SUPER 4609

SUPER 4628

Check out these giant LILLIES:

SUPER 4627

The best thing about the Super Floral Show is that it was right next to CNN, which was especially great when it came time to take a break...they have a huge food court along with a bunch of network gift shops. We got some ice cream and sat at a table emblazoned with the CNN LOGO. I couldn't help but hear the voice of Darth Vader - JAMES EARL JONES - echo in my head..."THIS IS CNN"...

SUPER 4607

SUPER 4612

Missy was super psyched about the CNN PENNY SMASHING MACHINE...she added a couple of pennies to her ever-growing collection:

...and then we found ANOTHER penny smashing machine in front of the CARTOON NETWORK gift shop! Missy got herself a FLAPJACK penny:

SUPER 4626

On the way home from Atlanta, Missy, me, and our co-worker, Sam, stopped off in CABBAGETOWN for a late lunch. We ended up getting slices of veggie pizza from the VILLAGE PIZZA CO...the tablecloths there were sheets of butcher paper that you could draw on...of course, Missy could not resist to add a couple of doodles:

Holy cow! Just wanted to give a shout out to our neighbor BEN, who works at the MAYFIELD DAIRY just 20 miles from Athens, in nearby Braselton...he hooked us up with crate full of Mayfield product - a couple cartons of ORANGE JUICE, a big carton of CHOCOLATE MILK, two smaller bottles of chocolate milk, four smaller single bottles of chocolate milk, and six bottles of SWEET TEA. Ben is definitely on top of our list when we get an overflow of vegetables in our garden this year...yay, Ben!

Beararium

Beararium., originally uploaded by sugar-cookie.

Here is my Beararium. It is a terrarium I made from a honey bear! We seem to have alot of honey bears at our house, so I was trying to think of new ways to use these very cute containers. You can make one, too. Here is how.

What you will need:

• one clean, dry, honey bear

• pebbles

• potting soil

• seeds (I used wheat grass)

What to do:
First, put some pebbles in the bottom of your honey bear. Make sure the layer is about a half inch thick. This will help with draining when you water your bear. Next add some soil. I filled my bear almost to the top. Make sure to leave room to add some seeds! Next add some seeds. You don't need many of them, maybe about a half of a teaspoon. Add a little more soil on top to cover the seeds. Water your seeds and place your Beararium in a sunny spot. Water it regularly and watch it grow!

Beararium.
I planted mine last Saturday and look how fast it has grown! I planted wheat grass because it is easy to grow and it grows quickly! Plus, it is a good treat for Nilla and Oreo!

Beararium.
The Beararium has been growing for a few days, and if you look very close, you can see the roots reaching all the way through the honey bear, and notice how the stalks of grass are growing and wiggling in the honey bear's nose!

Nilla Fifty-Eight

NILLA 4600

This evening we used NILLA to test out the metal PET ENCLOSURE that we won in a raffle at the BUNNY FEST this past weekend. Eventually, we'll use it to corral OREO when she moves into our craft room for the summer...but in the meantime, it might make a good place for Nilla to have a "TIME OUT" whenever she behaves badly!

NILLA 4592

Nilla was actually purrrring as she laid in the pen...weird! I think she thought we were playing or something...

NILLA 4590

The cool thing about the enclosure is that there is a handy GATE for easy access...Missy got in the pen with Nilla to demonstrate how big it is...more than enough room for little Oreo to frolic around...

BUNNYFEST!

BUNNYFEST 4573

Late saturday night, Missy got a message from her friend Abby, who works with the CAT ZIP ALLIANCE. Abby told Missy that there was going to be a BUNNY FEST in Stone Mountain, Georgia on Sunday, and that she was thinking about going to check it out. As soon as Missy read the words "BUNNY FEST" it was immediately put at the top of our agenda for the following day...I got down Nilla's pet carrier from up high in our supply closet, and prepped it for our bunny, OREO, the next morning...

We left Athens around 12:30 yesterday afternoon, and got to the ST. TIMOTHY CHURCH in Stone Mountain about an hour-and-a-half later. The event was in the recreation center behind the church. We followed the signs leading us to the festival, like Alice chasing after the White Rabbit...

We paid for our admission at the check-in desk...and then paid for memberships in the North Georgia chapter of the national HOUSE RABBIT SOCIETY...and then bought Oreo a ticket for the BUNNY SPA, which included a BUNNY MASSAGE, and a ticket for the BUNNY PORTRAIT STUDIO...we even ended up buying tickets for the raffle. How could we not resist the lure of pet pampering and fabulous prizes?

We stayed till the very end of Bunny Fest, to see if we would get lucky in the raffle...WE DID! I ended up winning the big prize - a huge dog-sized metal EXERCISE PEN! Best four dollars I ever spent! Lucky too, because we were actually in the market for such a pen to put in our craft room for Oreo. With summer upon us, it'll soon be too hot for our bunny to stay out on our enclosed patio, no matter how shady it is. Now she'll be able to relax all summer in air-conditioned comfort, with plenty of room to roam without getting into trouble with electrical wires and craft supplies...not to mention NILLA! I got up on stage to dismantle my prize, which was on display...everyone else was frantically packing up their bunnies so that the kids waiting to play basketball could have their court back...

Hairpins!

Hello everyone! Here are some of my newest goodies I added to SHOPPE SUGAR COOKIE. I made a bunch of cute hairpins! Maybe some of you have seen these at our tables at the craft sales, too. I love making these cos they are so cute and miniature. And they look very nice in my hair! Above is a little cookie that is made from thick wool felt. As you can see, the details from my drawing are etched into the felt.

Me wearing my felt ruby hairpins!
Red rubies are every gal's dream, right? But who can tell that these are not the real deal, but in fact are made from red wool felt?

Bunny Hairpins.
These little hairpins remind me of our beloved Oreo! This is what she looks like when she is sleeping! Shh! Please do not wake her. She needs some rest... These little buns are made from my original drawing from beautiful bamboo. I love the way these look, and I think you might, too.

Diamond bamboo hairpins.
Rubies, diamonds! Once again, you can't tell that this is not the real thing! Amaze your friends! I know I do when I wear these hairpins. It is really made from lovely bamboo. Fabulous!

Everything Is Illuminated...And Delicious

DELI 4468

Today, Missy and I went to go check out this new place in town called EUROPEAN DELI...it's a little tiny deli-slash-grocery specializing in RUSSIAN AND EASTERN EUROPEAN foodstuffs. They had an amazing selection of chocolates and sweets with exceptional packaging...like these VIOLIN-SHAPED candy boxes:

DELI 4456

Missy was excited about the SQUIRREL on this box of chocolates:

DELI 4458

I thought the illustration on this bar of chocolate was pretty cool...plus, I'm just a sucker for the CYRILLIC ALPHABET:

DELI 4460

We also loved the portraits of RUSSIAN ROYALTY on these boxes of TEA...Russian "Royal Tea", geddit?

DELI 4464

We also loved the more WEIRD packaging that we saw...for example, the label on this HORSERADISH MAYONNAISE...WTF???

DELI 4459

Inexplicably, some of the packages of SAUSAGES in the freezer featured a photo of a little Russian boy on it...are these sausages made with baby meat?

DELI 4461

DELI 4466

DELI 4462

We ended up buying a bunch of Russian sweets and a pack of traditional GERMAN EGG NOODLES, like the kind you see in chicken soup...we'll definitely be back next week to stock up on more goodies...

DELI 4463

Signed, Sealed, Delivered

Here is how I package most, originally uploaded by sugar-cookie.

Someone asked me recently about how I package my handmade goodies that people see on Shoppe Sugar Cookie or my website. Well, I am going to tell you all about it right now. Okay, so if you visit the Rancho Cocoa table at the craft sales, you usually see my jewelry packaged like the photo above. I also ship it like this too. I use a 3 inch by 4 inch size bag with a zip closure. Each item gets a backing card, too, which is a full color design with my name and websites at the top. It is printed on card stock (thanks, Dad!)

If you order jewelry from my Etsy
Next I wrap the items in tissue paper. Right now I am using a red color, but I have blue in waiting! I might open the blue cos it is so pretty and will look good with my next step. I then use a cute Japanese tape or a sticker to finish off the tissue paper.

Then I wrap it in cellophane!
Last, I wrap the item in cellophane. This is a design I did for my work (thanks, work!) and I think it looks quite nice with my orders. I only just started using this design, but I think it looks so nice! I try and make my packages feel like Christmas or that you have a special gift for yourself or a friend.

Bird Flew

bird2

We have a couple of new tenants here at RANCHO COCOA (the house, not the blog)...yesterday morning we noticed that a couple of CAROLINA WRENS figured out a way to fly in and out of our enclosed patio and built a nest in a hanging basket. Missy managed to photograph one of the birds and I was able to take some fuzzy video of the birds working in tandem to build their nest...

bird1

The nest looks a bit like a little cave, with the back of the nest built up high to shade them from the late afternoon sun...a little scarecrow stands guard...

BIRD 4435

The birds took turns building the nest...as one bird flies off to collect more twigs, dead leaves, and straw, the other one would arrive with more building materials...

Rancho Cocoa Gardens

Pink lily., originally uploaded by sugar-cookie.

Hello, and welcome to Rancho Cocoa Gardens! We have been doing lots of planting here lately, so please feel free to have a good look around. As you can see, the lilies in our flowerbed have bloomed beautifully and are a wonderful shade of pink. That is a favorite color here at the Ranch!

Pumpkin flower.
We also are trying a few veggies. If you look to the left in the backyard, you will see these pumpkin plants that were started from mere seeds! Each one is growing a little yellow blossom that hopefully will turn into the Great Pumpkin!

Also growing in the veggie patch are cantaloupe, tomatoes, and peppers. We hope to add squash, lettuce, and broccoli very soon, though. You will have to come again to Rancho Cocoa Gardens to see that, though!

Jasmine climbing up the bamboo stake.
In the front yard is a nice arbor! Climbing up the bamboo stake is a pink jasmine plant that is a new addition to the Gardens. Look at it grow right up the pole like a candy cane! Amazing! And to think that it has only been here since April! This smells so pretty when it is in bloom, too.

This concludes our visit to the Rancho Cocoa Gardens! Please come again anytime, and maybe next time we will have some veggies to show. Have a nice day!

STRAP 4334

Just wanted to show everybody the cool CAMERA STRAP that Missy got from Chicago's SOULDIER, at I.C.E. ATLANTA this past weekend...what girl can resist HORSES AND PONIES? They look like they're galloping up her shoulder!
