Saturday morning, Missy's younger brother JOE took us to VILLAGE CANDY, this awesome candy shop in nearby Sewickley, Pennsylvania. We stocked up on fancy chocolate, gourmet beverages, and weird candy...

I was especially impressed with their selection of socially-irresponsible candy cigars and cigarettes...TRUTH:
Some of the sweets we hauled back to the house included this "Catatouille" candy dispenser that flips a tiny grilled fish on a pan when you push down on little lever :
A bag of gummi pasta:
The edible "Kandy Teef" that demonstrates how horrible your teeth will look if you eat too much candy:
This plastic toilet comes with a pair of plunger-shaped lollipops. The bowl is filled with a candy powder that you swirl your plunger in, before you plunge it into your mouth:
Hard to find candy cigarettes:
Missy got some more of these great 3400 PHINNEY chocolate bars with the super cool and cute packaging that we like so much:

Home Again

(Harry, the family cat, taking advantage of the warm spot left on Joe's bed)
Thanksgiving morning we headed outside into the cold, wanting to take photos in the quickly melting snow. Missy decided to dress up her HAPPY HARBOR Blythe doll (A.K.A. ISOBEL CREAMPUFF) in a warm bunny suit and take some glamour shots in and around her house:

The front of the Kulik homestead, which belies the actual size of the house, much like the tip of an iceberg:
A couple of painted gourd birdhouses up in a tree...Missy painted one to look like Pinocchio:

Isobel Creampuff posing on the picnic table in the backyard, overlooking a woody gorge:

After a morning spent in the cold, Missy and Isobel settled in for a nap:
Feeling The Power

(hand dryer, Gaffney, South Carolina)
It's now post-thanksgiving and we're stuffed. Don't know how or why, but it's well past midnight now and Missy and I are on the interbot. Wednesday, we took a thirteen-hour drive up to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from Athens, Georgia. The weather was gorgeous and made for a perfect road trip...
...we saw the giant peach-shaped water tower while passing through Gaffney, South Carolina. From certain angles, the water tower looks more like a giant ass than a giant peach:
We stopped at a FRIENDLY'S restaurant in Huntersville, North Carolina, for breakfast. I started to obsess over this really funky-bad Photoshop job on this little advertisement for their snowman ice cream dessert thing:

We went through a couple of tunnels to get to West Virginia before winding up at the TAMARACK welcome center, which boasts "The Best of West Virginia"...

Missy posing in the children's play area:

"I like turtles"...

After 13 hours of driving we ended our trek by adding on a couple more hours of (virtual) driving playing SUPER MARIO CART on the Wii, along with Missy's brother JOE and other people from around the world, via the on-line gaming mode:

Happy Thanksgiving 2008!

(yummilicious veggie stuffing, glorious green bean casserole, mouth-watering Grit gravy, and mind-melting mashed potatoes hot off our stove last Thanksgiving)
Well, Missy and I are leaving for Pittsburgh, PA in like, 4 or 5 hours. It's midnight right now, and dammit, I should be sleeping. We've got a long 13 hour-long roadtrip ahead of us. We'll be in Pennsylvania to visit Missy's family and to see her brother's new house. We also plan on seeing the 55th CARNEGIE INTERNATIONAL art exhibition, titled "Life On Mars", at Carnegie-Mellon University...the awesomely wonderful BARRY McGEE is part of the exhibition and I've been dying to finally see his work in person for the longest time now. I'm sooooo excited about this opportunity, you don't even know. Of course, no visit to Pittsburgh would be complete without a visit to the ANDY WARHOL MUSEUM, so we'll probably stop there too, time and weather permitting. And if I'm really lucky, Missy will take me for a ride on the INCLINE. We'll see. We won't be back until next week, so you probably won't be hearing from us again until then. I'm sure we'll have lots of photos and stories to share. Until then, please enjoy the early "Nilla post" below and have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Eat till ya pass out!

Nilla Thirty-Three

We recently bought a new vacuum and a new canopy and both items came in these huge boxes. So, instead of slicing them up and putting them into our recycling bins, we punched little windows in them and let Nilla use them as her little playhouses...

Handmade For The Holidays

Saturday was the big CRAFTSTRAVAGANZAA craft sale downtown. We got to the parking lot behind the 40 Watt at around 8am and it was FREEZING cold. My fingers were frozen numb from unloading the car. I ended up forgetting to bring a few important items to the sale (namely, our wire shelving system) and had we been in Atlanta or out of state, we would have been totally screwed. Luckily, we only live a couple of minutes away from downtown and I was able to run home and grab our missing items. Other than that little hiccup, and the fact that the first two and last two hours of the sale were unbearably cold, the day went really well! We met a lot of nice people, saw a lot of friends, and sold a ton of stuff. And, we got to debut a bunch of new Tofu Baby merchandise!

We sold all but one of the small Tofu Baby plush:

Weekend-Wind Down #32

Yesterday after the CRAFTSTRAVAGANZAA, Missy and I got a warm bite to eat at The Grit, then went home to take a quick nap before heading back downtown to the 40 Watt, to see ANDY FROM DENVER, CRYPTACIZE, and DANIELSON perform...well, I was able to get up from my nap, reluctantly, but Missy was not. She was still very sick and exhausted from standing in the cold all day at the craft sale. The spirit was willing but the body said "no way, Jose!" So, I took off downtown solo, borrowing Missy's beetle, because we were too tired to unload all the craft stuff from Lord Focus (we STILL have not unloaded my car). I got to the club a little later than expected and totally missed Andy and Sarah's set...dang. Since when did shows start starting on-time in Athens? Anyways, I did make it in time to see CRYPTACIZE and I'm so glad I did. This performance was way more enjoyable than their previous performance at the 40 Watt (during Popfest) and I dare say that, for me, it was probably the most sublimely perfect performances I've seen all year. I took pictures and video, but really, it pales in comparison to actually being there...and invariably, it almost always does:

After Cryptacize played, DANIELSON took to the stage bedecked in matching uniforms, and entertained us with songs from their double-album retrospective, "Trying Hartz"...they were awesome as always:
Daniel told the story behind the band's collaboration with JOHN FLUEVOG SHOES, and the shoes that he had designed for their new uniforms:

FAVORITE MOMENT OF THE PAST WEEK?
MISSY: Meeting all the nice Tofu Baby fans at the craft sale yesterday.
RAOUL: The Craftstravaganzaa.
WORST MOMENT OF THE PAST WEEK?

WHAT ONE THING DO YOU WANT TO DO IN PITTSBURGH THIS WEEK?

Holiday Craftstravaganzaa!

Hey Everybody!
Right now we're getting ready for the ATHENS INDIE CRAFTSTRAVAGANZAA tomorrow...we'll be in downtown Athens, in the parking lot behind the 40 Watt, for pretty much the entire day, along with about 50 other crafters, designers, and artisans. Come on down and get your Christmas shopping done early! Our table will have A LOT of totally affordable stocking stuffers, with prices ranging from $1.00 to $50.00...we've got something for everyone! Also just in, fresh off the assembly line - the talented Mr. Nick Canada of SATISFACTORY screenprinting was able bust out a last-minute bunch of TOFU BABY t-shirts and shopping totes for us! We also have the shirts in KIDS SIZES too! Check it out:

After standing all day in the cold, we plan on warming up at the 40 Watt later that night, clapping our hands and shaking our tails at the CRYPTACIZE and DANIELSON FAMILE show. It's gonna be a long day, but so totally worth it! If we don't see you in one place, hopefully we'll see you in the other. BUY HANDMADE!

Join Our Club!

Missy and I are dedicating time away from the internet towards getting more crafts done for the big ATHENS INDIE CRAFTSTRAVAGANZAA this weekend. I just wanted to share a couple of pictures that Linda Yoshida of BELLACETI took at the FELT CLUB craft sale in Los Angeles this past sunday. The lovely Janice, who runs the COPACETIQUE boutique of ultra-cute handmade goodness, had some of our stuff at her table, along with other cool items from her on-line store...yay!
Hello and Thank You, Linda and Janice!

Holidays On I.C.E.

Hey!
So, as I said before, saturday's I.C.E. ATLANTA holiday craft sale was hellza awesome and far exceeded our expectations. We couldn't have guessed that, judging by the way the day started out...our load-in time for the craft sale was scheduled at 7am...which meant we had to hit the road at a quarter to six in order to get to Atlanta on time, which in turn meant that we had to wake up at 5am to get ready and pack the car. We had planned to load my car, LORD FOCUS, the night before, but it was pouring rain. Well, when we got up the following morning, it was still raining cats and dogs. So, I had to load the car in the rain. When it started to downpour even harder, I ended up having to load the car while holding an umbrella. Needless to say, it took a much longer time to load our stuff into the car, and we ended up leaving much later than we wanted:
By the time we arrived in Atlanta (an hour later than we were supposed to), the rain had, thankfully, let up. The sale was at this place called AMBIENT + STUDIO. It was located on this second floor of this old warehouse, a really cool space. We parked across the street and rushed our things upstairs, worried about the hour of set-up time we had lost. After we moved the car to a remote parking lot, we hastily made our way back to the building.

Luckily for us, it didn't take long to set up. For one, we had less space to work with than what we were used to and only had to use two tables, rather than our usual three; and two, this was the sixth ever I.C.E. Atlanta craft sale we had participated in, so we kinda have our system down...

Missy decided that one of her plush "long bunnies" needed a scarf to keep warm, so she knitted one on the spot...

As soon as the doors opened the shoppers started pouring in. I quickly made my way around the the warehouse, just so I could get a quick glance of all the other booths. I even videotaped with my little camera, just so you could get a sense of how cool the space and set-up was. Good thing I did that when I had the chance, because from the opening bell there was a constant flow of shoppers and we found it hard to leave or table. Yay! Recession be damned!
The DJ was set up in this neat little loft space above the bar and food area. He deftly rocked the house from his bird-eyed vantage point with a truly eclectic mix of music:

We kept our energy levels up during the sale by snacking on yummy cupcakes from the vegan bakers' table and stuffed grape leaves we had bought at Earth Fare the day before. By the time the day was finally over, we were completely knackered. In the car, on the way home to Athens, Missy turned to me and said, "I think I'm sick..." Sure enough - probably due to all the stress, strain, and excitement of the day -Missy's worn-out immune system allowed a cold virus to infiltrate and propagate...

Oh, The Places We'll Go
Hey Friends,
So, you may have noticed lately that the posts on here have been sparse and brief. Well, Missy and I have been busy crafting up a storm, trying desperately to make enough stuff for the big I.C.E. ATLANTA HOLIDAY SALE this coming weekend. Suffice it to say, you can never have too much stuff, and so most of our free time has been spent off-line sewing, gluing, stuffing, cutting, folding, stapling, sweating, crying, etc. etc. A week ago, last wednesday, I allowed myself to go out to catch some bands at the FLICKER THEATER & BAR - two new bands on the K RECORDS roster, DESOLATION WILDERNESS and LAKE, and local favorite, MADELINE...I took some photos and a bit of video of the show...
The dreamy DESOLATION WILDERNESS:

LAKE in full-band attack mode:

Jason from CASPER & THE COOKIES joined LAKE on stage for a rendition of the BILLY JOEL classic "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)":
MADELINE and her band "winging it":

Wooden Bling

I have been making some new charms lately. Above you see some fabulous wooden bling, cos hey, who can afford the real thing? Ha ha. This is far more glamorous, wouldn't you agree? I already gave some as birthday gifts to my good friends Jo and Melinda!
Here is another wood charm design I made, too. This little biscuit is inspired by my zakka craft books I got when I visited Chicago a few years ago. I saw embroidered biscuits, but thought it would be more fun to have a wooden biscuit that you can't eat.
I simply had to get some Tofu Baby charms made, too. Just like the real thing, only flat!
All of these wonderful new goodies will be at ICE Atlanta on November 15 and Athens Indie Craftstravaganza on November 22. come by and say hi to us! Don't fret, you can still get these and more on my website or Shoppe Sugar Cookie!

Nilla Thirty

Raoul is practicing with his new band tonight, so I am posting these old pictures of Nilla! These are from when she was really young! Look at her! The top one she is lounging in a cabinet where I used to keep all my distro stuff (notice the cassettes and other assorted goodies!) The second is one of my favs. It is Nilla sitting on my kitchen table. Both of these were taken circa 2004 at my old house.

Obama!
Needless to say, I'm very happy with the way the election turned out. Yay! I'm exhausted from being nervous and excited all day yesterday, and exhausted from staying up late, watching all the coverage. Yesterday at the polls, at the elementary school near our house, I got busted for wearing my Obama badge:
Apparently, I had failed to see the huge red poster outside warning people not to "campaign" within 150 feet of the polling place. The vigilant volunteers there had me immediately take the badge off before I could vote...whoops!
Afterwards, Missy celebrated casting her vote by playing in the nearby playground:

Election night was exciting, special and surreal, even from the comfort of our living room couch...I stayed up late watching TV not wanting the moment to end. The best part of the night happened sometime after 1am. I heard yelling outside. In our quiet and dark neighborhood it's startling to hear people yelling. My first thought was, "domestic violence"...but as I listened intently I realized that what I was hearing was the sound of two female voices, running up and down the streets of the surrounding neighborhoods, yelling..."OBAMA IS PRESIDENT! OBAMA IS PRESIDENT!"...it was a bit eerie in that I felt like I was transported back in time and I was hearing the town crier announcing the joyous news. That more than anything last night sent shivers up my spine...

Weekend Wind-Down #29

Soooooo, Halloween turned out to be somewhat of a bust for Missy and me. We waited for trick-or-treaters to come to our door, but none came, and we both ended up falling asleep. We woke up from our naps still with plenty of time to hit the town, but by then the mood escaped us and curling up under warm blankets seemed much more appealing. The following day we hit up Target and took advantage of their half-off Halloween sale. We got a head start on our Halloween costumes for next year and I found lil' DOMO with two turntables and a microphone.
Earlier this afternoon, our friend Jenny - who crafts under the name PRAIRIE DOG INC. - dropped by to deliver a cute little squid pin that she had made out of felt. Missy had ordered from her ETSY shop. I think there's a matching yellow one that we're thinking about getting now:

Happy Halloween Cakes

Since Halloween was yesterday I thought it would be a good idea to send you all a recipe I have been using this season. It is for these yummy chocolate chip pumpkin cupcakes that you see above! I adapted it from this recipe I found. This is a great recipe for Thanksgiving, too! Here is my recipe...
Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Cake
1¾ C pumpkin puree
1 C oil
2 bananas
2 C sugar
2 C flour
¼ C maple syrup
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp fresh nutmeg
½ tsp salt
½ tsp ground ginger
¼ tsp ground cloves
¾ C chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350°F. Mash up the banana and mix it with the pumpkin, sugar, syrup, and oil. In another bowl mix together flour, soda, powder, salt, and spices. Next add all this to the pumpkin mixture and then fold in the chocolate chips. Put in prepared cupcake tin and fill with batter. Bake for 20 minutes.
